Primary Bedroom

As the updates come less frequently, I promise renovations are actually happening, and although the primary bedroom still isn't finished, it's at least to a somewhat better state, so we thought we'd share some photos.

The primary bedroom probably should have been one of our starting points, but it just didn't work out that way. When we first closed on the house, it was probably the room in the best shape... which isn't saying much, but at least it wasn't as bad as the others. Still, it wasn't great - no real baseboards, a weird paint scheme (that wasn't exactly painted with accuracy or to proper completion).

The lime green trim with a kind of light blue (dirty) wall, wasn't exactly great. The blinds were also falling apart and quite dirty. But, as with the other rooms, carpet came out nearly immediately. Although difficult to tell in this initial photo, the room is a fairly decent size. We'd initially thought that we'd break through that back wall and connect to a bathroom that's on the other side, but quickly decided that it probably didn't make sense for a variety of reasons.

So, we put this room on hold and went on to working in other areas, but (as stated in prior updates), sleeping on the floor was not ideal, so we were anxious to get to work so that it wouldn't continue on endlessly.
It's taken quite a bit, but eventually we were able to get the walls painted, get the light fixture changed out, and at least had the opportunity to put a mattress on the floor. Not an ideal sleep-situation, but it was working just fine while we continued on with other projects.
As of today, we now have baseboards installed, floors painted, a dresser and bed in the room, and some curtains. Although the room still isn't done, at least we are now sleeping on a bed (yay!) and I think that once we have a couple of side tables and a couple of other pieces, as well as some art on the walls -- oh, and we still need to change out the outlets/light switches, but we're almost there, so I'm happy to have a somewhat done room at this point.

We still don't have all of our bedding unpacked, so the bed isn't quite made (it'll get there), the curtains are wrinkled because I don't have a means of un-wrinkling them at the moment, the dog bed will be moved to another location (as the dog sleeps in our bed and has no real interest in her bed, except for maybe an occasional toy). The photos aren't great either because they were taken in the dark, but at some point, once we have all (or most) of the bits in place, I'll take another photo to share.
A panoramic view - it comes out a bit skewed but provides a better look at the entirety of the room.

In the meantime, laundry and secondary bathroom are coming along. We are currently waiting for the floor tile to set so that I can grout it. But, both rooms have been painted, so if we can get the tile done, then we can actually have a laundry room again (YAY!!!!!!!) and the bathroom will be functional again once we get a toilet and sink back in place. Hoping that within the next couple of weeks, we'll have photos to share of those two areas as well. All is moving along and we're excited to have more of a functional home.

Upstairs: The Office and the Loft

The inside of the house is closing in on completion. It's hard to believe that the interior is all going to be wrapped up soon. This house has been an interesting project and experience. It's also been very painful and challenging at times. Through it all, the goal was to have a home that we could enjoy, feel comfortable living in, and be able to have family and friends come to visit. I think we accomplished those goals, but it has come at a cost of personal time over the last eight months. Still, being able to completely change, update, and renew a large house with just two people doing the work that probably should've been spread out over years -- well, we are grateful to have had the opportunity. It feels as though we actually were able to save something destined for demolition.  Before getting to the upstairs areas (beyond the guest room, which we shared recently), we thought it would be nice to show the stairs.  The upper-level stairs. They look better in the photo th...

Catching up: The Studio in the New House

It's been about six months since we've had anything to share here about home renovations. So, a bit of catching up to do, I suppose. We had a mad dash of searching for houses in June and ended up choosing something that we didn't think we would ever select -- a flipped house. It was not a house that we fell in love with, but it had what we needed (or at least had the space to add whatever we might need), and because all of the underneath bits had just been done, it seemed like the best choice to make, given that we'd spent nearly eight months prior redoing a nearly 90-year-old house.  This house is completely different from the house in Oregon. It doesn't have the built in charm, nor is there anything particularly special about it. The choices that were made by the flipping company were not anything we would have chosen. It is all very gray and white, which was not particularly exciting for two people who just had the opportunity to pick out all the bits for the fo...

All good things must come to an end

This isn't the post we thought we'd be writing at this juncture in our home restoration/renovation project, but here we are. After just finishing up the inside of the house, it was put up for sale. In eight months, we've managed to redo an entire house's interior, and although we thought we'd be making a lot of transformation to the exterior as well, that just didn't happen. Time is now in short supply and what has been done is all that we can do. It's a strange feeling to know that the house is finally ready for us to start living life, and to also know that our life won't be lived here. We took care and time to do our best to make this house something for us to enjoy and feel comfortable in for the foreseeable future -- choosing all the things that made us happy -- but sometimes life has plans that don't keep us on the most obvious path in front of us. The reason for our move to this central Oregon location is the very same one taking us away from ...
